Keeping It Simple

The owners of this ranch house needed extra living space for the young family. The addition of a 2nd floor, garage and mudroom expansion as well as renovating the existing kitchen and living room provides the home the family was looking for.

Adding the front porch provided the means to conceal the extra height this type of project incurs. This porch provides an outdoor living space and shelter for visitors. The front porch also works to take the visual focus away from the original Roman brick, replacement of which was outside the scope of the budget. The colonial styling of the “new” home is in response to the neighborhood of traditional houses.

The new 2nd floor provides three new bedrooms and two new bathrooms. The new spaces are all generously sized without being excessive and the new stair hall is large enough to accommodate a computer nook and storage armoire. The children’s hall bath is finished in bright yellow and white tiles. The parents’ bath, including shower, tub, vanity and water closet, is finished in more subdued colors. A large walk in closet with south facing window is provided as part of the parents’ suite.

At the 1st floor one of the original three bedrooms has been eliminated for the new stair. The remaining two bedrooms have been converted to a guest bedroom and study. The walls between the original kitchen and dining / living areas has been removed to create a large great room. Because the kitchen can be seen from the front door, the cabinetry is again of furniture quality.

Completing the 1st floor work is the new, oversized garage and the extra large mudroom. Making these spaces larger than average was a necessity as the house had no basement or attic storage space.
